Chapter 3 - Matter Flashcards
What are the characteristics of matter?
it has mass and occupies space
What are the 3 states of matter?
solid, liquid, gas
The state of a given sample of matter depends on what?
the strength of forces among the particles contained in the matter
The stronger the forces are between particles…
the more rigid the matter
Solid has what characteristics?
fixed shape and volume
Liquid has what characteristics?
definite volume but takes the shape of its container
Gas has what characteristics?
no fixed volume or shape; takes shape and volume of its container
What are physical properties?
Properties of matter that don’t affect the composition of the substance
What are some examples of physical properties?
odor, color, volume, state, density, melting point, and boiling point
What are chemical properties?
the ability of the matter to form new substances
What is electrolysis?
decomposition of water by an electric current; chemical process
What is a physical change?
changes that don’t affect the composition of the substance
What is a chemical change?
involves a change in the fundamental components of a substance; also called reactions
What are elements?
substances that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical means
What are compounds?
substances composed of a given combination of elements that can be broken down into those elements by chemical means
