Chapter 3-Kinetic Molecular theory Flashcards
Define diffusion
Process that takes place when a gas/liquid moves from a region of high concentration to a region of lower concentration.
Define melting point
A fixed temperature at which a solid completely changes state to a liquid.
Define freezing point
A fixed temperature at which a liquid completely changes state to a solid.
Define boiling point
A fixed temperature at which a liquid completely changes to a state to a gas.
Define condensation point
A fixed temperature at which a gas completely changes state to a liquid.
Define sublimation
A fixed temperature at which a solid completely changes state to a gas.
Define deposition
A fixed temperature at which a gas completely changes state to a solid.
Define temperature
A measure of a substance’s internal energy.
Define heat
Is the energy in transit due to a difference in temperature and always flows from hot to cold.(Heat is not to be confused with warmth-being warm)
What does the Brownian motion describe?
The Brownian motion describes the behavior of solids, liquids and gases in terms of how they move.
What process do gasses move through?
Gasses move through a process called diffusion.
What are the characteristics of solids
- Higher density than liquids and gases.
- Keep their shape.
- Expand when heated.
- Pure solids melt at characteristic temperatures.
What are the characteristics of liquids?
- Fill their containers, can spread.
- Take the shape of the container.
- Can be poured-flow.
- Density less than solid but higher than gasses.
- Evaporate.
- Pure substances boil at characteristic temperatures.
- Expand when heated.
What are the characteristic for gasses?
- Fill their containers, can spread.
- Take the shape of the container.
- Can be poured- flow.
- Low density.
- Expand when heated.
- Can be compressed.
