Chapter 3 - Interior Water Distribution and Interior Waste Systems Flashcards
What is an indication of a possible water main break?
When you notice that the pressure gauges suddenly drop for example from 55 PSI to 35 PSI.
If a fire hydrant is opened nearby buildings and houses how would that impact their water service lines?
It would impact their water service lines by reducing pressure.
What is a last resort in determining the cause of pressure Lost within a plumbing system?
Digging down to the water main or service line to clear out any obstructions.
If you’re trying to locate a week that’s flowing underneath the concrete floor or between two concrete walls in the waters not visible at the break why would you be able to findwater flowing from somewhere else away from the break?
Because water taste the path of least resistance.
When you’re trying to find a leak but you’re not sure because the Area is dark or unlit what would you do to find the suspected leak?
You place a piece of paper under the suspect a leak and listen for dripping sounds or inspect the paper for the presence of water.
If there is a leak within the walls of the building how would this damage the building?
The leak would cause structural damage to the building.
What would you use to make a temporary repair to steel pipe?
You would use an emergency pipe clamp.
When making a temporary repair with an emergency pipe clamp how would you ensure that the repair is watertight?
By positioning the emergency clinic so that the gasket covers the whole.
Would you be able to make temporary repairs with an emergency pipe clamp above ground or underground?
You can use this type of clamp in both.
What type of clamp would you use to make temporary repairs on copper tubing?
You would use a clamp referred to as a Band-Aid.
What types of clamps would you use to temporarily repair cast iron pipe?
Full circle clamps,
Split repair clamps.
What are the minimum and maximum sizes that full circle clamps and split repair clamps come in?
6 to 30 inches.
What do full-circle clamps and split repair clamps have inside of the band?
Rubber gaskets.
In full circle clamps and split repair clams how are the ends of the gaskets designed to form an overlapping seal of consistent thickness?
The gaskets inside of these temporary repair clamps or tapered where it overlaps.
What type of metal are full circle clamps and split repair clamps made of?
They are usually made of stainless steel.
What type of clamps repair cast iron pipe leaks at caulked joints or fittings?
Bell joint clamps.
Before installing any type of temporary repair clamp what should you do to prepare for installation?
You should clean the pipe of all the dirt and rust.
How would you ensure that you’re using the correct sized clamps when making temporary repairs to any type of pipes?
You should measure the outside diameter of the pipe.
When using unions to make a permanent repair and steel piping how many inches away from the fittings would you install it?
4 inches away from the fittings.
When making permanent repairs what should you do to copper tubing before trying to repair it?
You need to drain the copper tubing of all water.
If a system that uses copper tubing uses compression type joints what would you do to repair leaks at the joints?
You would tighten the compression type joints with a wrench.
When you’re making repairs to the copper hot water line what would you do before draining the water?
You would make sure that the water heater is off before draining.
What would you use to make permanent repairs to cast-iron piping?
You would use compression couplings.
When making permanent repairs to cast-iron piping with compression couplings what are the first and second steps?
Slide the follower onto the pipes, slide the gaskets onto the pipes.
When making permanent repairs to cast-iron piping with compression couplings what is the third and fourth step?
You would slide the middle ring onto the pipe and place the repair section into position, slide the middle ring back until it is centered between the pipe and the repair piping.
