The study of the causes, patterns, prevalence, and control of disease in groups of people
Epidemiologist
Medical professional who studies the causes, distribution, and control of disease in populations
Injury
Intentional or unintentional damage to a person that resulted from acute exposure to thermal, mechanical, electrical, or chemical energy or from the absence of such essentials as heat or oxygen
Injury Risk
A real or potential hazardous situation that puts individuals at risk for sustaining an injury
Injury Surveillance
An ongoing systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of injury data essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public heath practice, closely integrated with the timely dissemination of the data to those who need to know
Intentional Injury
Injuries and deaths self-inflicted or perpetrated by another person, usually involving some type of violence

Primary Injury Prevention
Keeping an injury from occurring
Secondary Injury Prevention
Preventing further injury from an event that has already happened
Teachable Moment
The time just after an injury has occurred when the patient and observers remain acutely aware of what has happened and may be more receptive to learning how the event or illness could have been prevented
Years of Potential Life Lost (YPLL)
A method that assumes that, on average, most people will live a productive life until the age of 65 years.
