All-Hazards Emergency Preparedness
A cross-cutting approach in which all forms of emergencies, including manmade and natural disasters, epidemics, and physical and biologic terrorism, are managed from a common template that uses consistent language and structure
Emergency Service Function (ESF)
A grouping of government and certain private sector capabilities into an organizational structure to provide the support, resources, program implementation, and services most likely to be needed to save lives, protect property and the environment, restore, essential service and critical infrastructure, and help victims and communities return to normal, when feasible, after domestic incidents
Epidemiology
The study of the prevalence and spread of disease in a community
Health
A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Isolation
The seclusion of individuals with an illness to prevent transmission to others
Public Health
The discipline that studies the overall health of populations and intervenes of behalf of those populations rather than on behalf of individuals
Quarantine
The seclusion of groups of exposed but asymptomatic individuals for monitoring
