What is a humanist?
A person who adopts a system of thought that centres on humans and their worth, capacities and values.

What did humanists in northern Italian city states study?
Greek and Roman, also applied classical ideas to modern life.
What is democracy?
A form of government in which people elect representatives to rule
What were the four main ideas humanists believed in?
Use power of reason to find the truth for themselves.
Have an open curious and questioning mind.
Achieve great things through learning.
Develop mind, spirit, and body (the whole child).
What do aqueducts do?
Carry water great distances to cities.
What is a philosopher?
One who studies truth and principles underlying human knowledge and conduct and the nature of the universe
Petrarch was a humanist thinker. How did he compare the classical age and his current time?
He regarded the past as glorious and the present as a dark age.
What do civic humanists believe In?
Being a responsible citizen.
Educating yourself before voting, working to improve society
What does it mean to educate the whole child?
To train mind, spirit and body.
What is rhetoric?
The art of making speeches.

Petroglyphs are carved into stone and pictographs are drawn.
