The view that humans want to maximize happiness. That the government should act to make the most people happy.
Utilitarianism
The absence of physical and legal restraints on an individual.
Negative Freedom
The ability to do something worth doing/enjoying.
Positive Freedom
The same legal and political rights for all persons.
Equal Rights
The equal chance for every person to get ahead in life regardless of their background.
Equality of Opportunity
An equal distribution of income, power, wealth, etc.
Equality of Outcome
Policies designed to increase the proportion of persons from disadvantaged or minority groups
Affirmative Action / Employment Equity
Rule by the people
Democracy
A system where the citizens themselves make governing decisions
Direct Democracy
A system that combines a high level of individual freedom with the election of representatives
Liberal Representative Democracy
A form of democracy in which citizens have greater control through referendums, initiatives, and recall elections
Plebiscitary Democracy
A vote by citizen on a particular issue
Referendum
A procedure that enables citizens the right to create a proposition, and with petition signatures, it is taken to vote on by the electorate
Initiative
A procedure that allows citizens, with a sufficient number of signatures, to remove a representative from office.
Recall
A political system where decisions are made by free and equal citizens rather than representatives alone
