Concurrent Powers
Powers given to both levels (roads, transportation, tax).
Enumerated Powers
Powers given only to national government
Reserved Powers
Powers given to local police, health, fire, education, government, etc.
Interstate Commerce
Any trade of goods that could potentially cross state lines
Dual Federalism
National and State government. Two clearly distinct governments that have different powers.
Horizontal Federalism
Full faith and credit for legal contracts, no trade barriers between states. Automatic rights of state citizenship.
Layers of Government
1 US Government. 50 State Governments. 89,476 Local governments.
3 Types of Local Governments
Commission, Council Manager, Council Mayor.
Commission Government
Small legislature, governs by committee.
Council Manager
Small legislature that hires profession bureaucrat to administer.
Council Mayor
Small legislature and elected executive.
Domestic Policy “Social Welfare State”
Providing economic stability for citizens is one of the basic purposes of government.
FDR’s New Deal 1933
- Direct cash assistance to people in desperate straits (Federal Emergency Relief)
- Hire unemployed people
- Create social safety net to stabilize citizens
