Chapter 3 FDNY Apparatus Flashcards
Function of engine apparatus:
is to deliver engine company personnel, hose, appliance, tools, and position appropriately to utilize the various sources of available sources of water needed in operations.
Sizes of hoses used and desired flows to achieve effective stream: 1 ¾”: ____ gpm; 2 ½”: _____ gpm; 3 ½” : more than ____ gpm
1 ¾”: 180 gpm;
2 ½”: 225-250gpm;
3 ½” : more than 400 gpm
Factors that influence necessary pump pressure:
amount of water being pumped; diameter of hose; length of stretch; desired nozzle pressure; elevation; nozzle tip
Supply of water can be established from:
Connection to a hydrant; drafting; supply line from another apparatus; booster tank water (500 gallons, 2-3 minutes max)
Intake gauge:
indicates pressure of water supplying the pump, no water flowing is static pressure; water flowing is indicated through residual pressure
Master pressure gauge:
reads pressure the pump is putting out
Inlets (how many and size)-
most engines have 5 inlets: 3 4 ½” inlets and 2 3” inlets
Discharges (how many and size)-
most engines have 6 discharges: 2 3” discharges and 4 2 ½” discharges.
2 types or aerial ladder:
Rearmount and Tiller:
100’ aerial ladder:
Tiller has tractor trailer rig with maneuverable rear wheels
3rd type of ladder apparatus currently is Tower Ladder:
75-95’, has superior elevated large caliber stream capability
Tormentors:
Hydraulic supports with direct frame attachment; Rearmount: 2 tormentors;
Tiller: 2 tormentors;
Tower Ladder: Chassis support at 6 points, 4 jacks at each corner and 2 outriggers alongside outrigger.
Aerial Ladder:
100’, 4 sections ladder made of corten steel; Rungs are spaced 14” apart
Aerial ladders uses:
(Mnemonic: LOVERS) Ladder pipe operations; Observation post to assess conditions; Ventilation; Entry; Rescue; Search
Aerial Ladder placement:
To the roof: Tip is at least 5 feet above point;
To window: Ladder tip should be less than 6” over the sill;
Alongside a fire escape: Against building with tip 1 to 3 feet above balcony railing
Operations for removal of victim(s) by aerial ladder:
Preferential order for removal of people is via: (I Have Five Little Rats) Interior stairs, horizontal exits, fire escapes, ladders, life-saving rope.
Removal is not considered complete until:
Victim has been assisted all the way to the ground.
A serious fire in the front (Ladder Protocol):
Both members assist the most helpless victim onto the ladder and the chauffeur assists the victim below the point of danger and then to the street;
A serious fire in the rear (Ladder Protocol):
Simple removal first and then concentrate on the difficult removal which will require two members.
Ladder Rescue Protocol:
Climb to window and assist victim out of window feet first; Always carry small children down ladders; To descend with an ambulatory victim place yourself one rung below the rung the victim is standing on; If victim panics take control by pressing him against the ladder with your body
