Chapter 3 (Cell Biology & Histology) Flashcards
cells are basic unit of life, all living things are composed of one or more cells, all cells come from pre-existing cells
Cell Theory
contains the genetic library, DNA, brain of the cell
Nucleus
RNA nad protein
Nucleolus
network of membranes for chemical reactions
Endoplasmic Reticulum
contains ribosomes, which maufacture all proteins
Rough ER
lack ribosomes, catalyaze reactions involving lipids
Smooth ER
modify, concentrate, and package the proteins and lipids made at ER
Golgi Apparatus
powerhouse of the cell
Mitchondria
site of protein synthesis
Ribosomes
contain digestive enzymes, breakdown unwanted particles
Lysosomes
“skeleton” of the cell, supports cellular structures, generates cell movements
Cytoskeletons
phospholipid bilayer, embedded proteins, regulates movement of materials in and out, selectively permeable barrier
Plasma/Cell membrane
Functions as passageways for plasma membrane, marks cells as “self” or “non-self”, cytoskeletal anchors
Protein
prevent movement or substances between cells
Tight junctions
allow ions to pass from cell to cell for communications
Gap Junctions
