Chapter 3 - Building Construction Flashcards
Type 1 Construction (p78)
**Fire-resistive construction
-Highest level of protection
-All structural members are composed of noncombustible or limited combustible materials with high fire-resistive rating
-Does not add to fuel load
-Most collapse resistant
-Reinforced concrete
-Steel framing
-Often incorrectly referred to as being fireproof
-Compartments can retain heat
-Roofs difficult to penetrate
-Windows potentially nonoperating, difficult to open for venting
Type 2 Construction (p79)
**Noncombustible construction
-Materials that will not contribute to fire spread
-Metal framing members
-Metal cladding
-Unprotected concrete
-Open web joists
-Lighter weight materials with lower fire ratings
Type 3 Construction (p79)
**Ordinary construction
-Mercantile + Businesses
-Residential structures
-Older schools
-EXTERIOR WALLS & STRUCTURAL MEMBERS made of noncombustible or limited combustible materials
-Interior walls, columns, beams, floors, and roofs are mostly constructed of wood
Type 5 Construction
Wood frame
-Exterior load-bearing walls are composed entirely of wood
-Single family residences
-2x4 studs for framing
-Siding materials include vinyl, nails, screws, glue, insulation
Manufactured mobile homes
Most common type of factory built homes
-Usually have wheels and a permanent undercarriage
-Required to conform to US Dept of Housing and Urban Develepment standards
Modular Homes
-6% of all factory-built structures are modular
-Can be stacked vertically and horizontally
Panelized Homes
-Assembled on site
-Preconstructed panels made of foam sandwiched between sheets of plywood
-Normally 8 ft wide by up to 40 ft long panels
-Self-supporting, framing members unnecessary
Pre-cut Homes
-Assembled on site
-Pole houses
-Post and beam construction
-Log homes
-A-frames
-Geodesic domes
