Chapter 3 - Ammunition Flashcards
Name the four components that make up a handgun, SLR or MOR cartridge
1) Primer
2) Case
3) Propellant
4) Bullet
Name the five components that make a shotgun cartridge
1) Primer
2) Case
3) Propellant
4) Wad
5) Pellets/shot
Explain the difference between Berdan and Boxer primers
Berdan primers consist of two flash holes where the anvil forms part of the case whereas Boxer primers consist of one flash hole where the anvil forms part of the primer
Explain the difference between a roll crimp and star crimp
Roll crimps close of cases with a rounded piece of paper or plastic and is only used for buck shot wheres star crimps seal and compress shot with a star shaped crimp and is used only for birdshot
Explain the cartridge firing sequence for handguns, SLRs and MORs
1) The firing pin strikes the primer
2) This creates the flash which moves through the flash holes into the case igniting the propellant
3) The propellant creates expanding gasses and pressure
4) This pushes the bullet through and out the barrel
5) The bullet is the only part of the cartridge that hits the target
Explain the cartridge firing sequence for shotguns
1) The firing pin strikes the primer
2) This creates the flash which moves through the flash holes into the case igniting the propellant
3) The propellant creates expanding gasses and pressure
4) This pushes the pellets and wad through and out the barrel
