Chapter 3: Addressing on Networks Flashcards
IANA
(Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) The organization responsible for tracking the assignments of domain names, port numbers, and IP addresses.
MAC Addresses
Are 48 bits long, and are written as hexadecimal numbers separated by colons. The first 24 bits are known as the OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier), which identifies the NIC’s manufacturer.
IP Addresses
Identify nodes at the network layer. An IP address is required in order for a device to communicate with an outside network through a gateway device such as a router.
How many addresses does an IP has?
Every IP has two addresses (Network + Device Address).
What does the first and last part of an IPv4 address identify?
The first part of an IPv4 address identifies the network and the last part identifies the host.
DHCP Scope
A range of addresses to be assigned to clients when they request an IPv4 address.
Address Translation
A gateway device between a private network and other networks sub. the private IP addresses used by computers on the private network with its own public IP address when these computers need access to other networks on the internet.
IPv6
Developed to improve routing capabilities and speed of communication over the established IPv4 standards and to allow for more public IP addresses on the internet.
Unicast Address
Specifies a single node on an IPv6 network.
IPv6 Addressing
Designed so that a computer can autoconfigure its own link local IP address without the help of a DHCPv6.
Port
A number assigned to a process, such as an application or service, that can receive data.
TCP and UDP ports
Ensure that data is transmitted to the correct process among multiple processes running on the computer.
