Chapter 2: Network Infrastructure and Documentation Flashcards
TIA
Telecommunications Industry Association (former parent company EIA)
EIA
Electronic Industries Alliance
TIA/EIA-568 Commercial Building Wiring Standard (or structured cabling)
Describes uniform, enterprisewide cabling systems, regardless of who manufactures or sells the various parts used in the system.
Where does a network begin and where does a network end?
A network begins at the demarc and ends at a workstation.
Demarc
The device that marks where a telecommunication’s service provider’s network ends and the organization’s network begins.
Horizontal Cabling
Connects workstations to the closet data room and to switches housed in that room.
MDF (Main Distribution Frame)
Also known as main cross connect, the centralized point of interconnection between an organization’s LAN or WAN and a service provider’s facility.
IDF (Intermediate Distribution Frame)
A junction between the MDF and the concentrations of fewer connections - for example, those that terminate in a data closet.
Patch
A correction, improvement, or enhancement to software.
Patch Management
The process of monitoring the release of new patches, testing them for use on networked devices, and installing them.
A standard TIA/EIA outlet
Voice and Data connector plugs in wall
Patch Cable
A relatively short length of cabling with connectors at both ends.
Backbone Cabling
Consist of cables or wireless links that provide interconnection between the entrance facility and MDF and between MDF and IDFs
