What is human memory?
A system that not only allows us to record, store, an retrieve the information that is acquired through our senses.
It also influences the way this information is perceived, encoded and stored.
What is encoding?
Refers to the processes involved in getting the information into the system by transforming in external stimulus into an internal representation, which allows us to retain in the cognitive system.
What is storage?
It involves information retention over time. Can be short-term or relatively permanent.
What is retrieval?
The processes that allow us to find the information stored in our memory.
What is forgetting?
The processes that prevents us from finding it.
What are the three major component of memory in the model of Atkinson and Shiffrin?
- Sensory memory
- Working or short-terms memory
- Long-term memory
What is sensory memory?
The information in sensory memory is not yet encoded, but stored. Visual, auditory and haptic.
What is short-term memory? (working memory)
Most information held in the short-term memory is information which we are consciously aware of
