CHapter 3 Flashcards
Cytology
The study of cells
Cells have three main parts
Membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm
The cell membrane is selectively permeable
This controls what enters and leaves the cell
The cell membrane is a double layer of phospholipids with embedded proteins

Cytoplasm
The area between the plasma membrane and the nucleus
Endoplasmic reticulum. Name it’s function
Complex system or network of interconnected membranes, canals, or channels. It’s function is to transport proteins and lipids to the cell.
Golgi apparatus
Series of flattened membrane’s. It’s function is to package and deliver proteins produced by the endoplasmic reticulum
Mitochondria
It’s function is to create chemical energy from food that is converted to usable energy ATP
Centrosome
Is the center of chromatin/chromosomes
Centrioles
Composed of two cylinders called
Diffusion
Molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Facilitated diffusion
Molecules diffuse through a membrane with the help of proteins
Osmosis
The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
Hypotonic solution
The solution has a lower salute concentration Dennis sell so water moves into the cell causing plant cells to swell and animal cells to swell and burst
Isotonic solution
The concentration of salutes is equal inside and outside so so water moves across the membrane in both directions maintaining the cells size
