Chapter 3 Flashcards
endocrine system
a communication network of ductless glands that secrete chemical messengers called hormones.
protein hormones
most vertebrate hormones, made up of strings of amino acids
peptide hormones
when hormones are small and only made up of a small number of amino acids
steroid hormones
The lag time of when a stimulus is sensed and a hormone is produced is longer than protein hormones, steroid hormones cannot be stored in cells so they are immediately released into the bloodstream. hydrophobic
target cell
cells with the receptor site for a particular hormone are target cells for that hormone
axons
nerve cell fibers that transmit electrical information from one nerve cell to another
dendrites
nerve cell fibers that receive electrical information from other cells
mushroom bodies
a cluster of small neurons located at the front of the brain of some invertebrates and associated with spacial navigation
Geoff Hill interview
Science today is very exact, scientists have to focus on one thing rather than a whole field of things to keep with with all the research that is coming out daily. Studies birds, proximate vs ultimate perspectives.
