Chapter 3-5 Flashcards
What are chemicals in the brain that carry messages between neurons?
Neurotransmitters
2 sections of the nervous system
Central NS and Peripheral NS
Central NS includes
Brain and spinal cord
Peripheral NS includes
2-way communication
The 2 sections of Peripheral NS are
Autonomic division and somatic division
controls internal organs/glands (involuntary)
Autonomic division
controls skeletal muscles (voluntary)
Somatic divistion
Energizes the body, expands energy; fight/flight response
Sympathetic division
Conserves energy, calms the body
Parasympathetic division
The “old brain”; controls most of the basic functions related to survival
Central Core
The “new brain”; makes us human and allows for the higher-level mental processes we process
Cerebral Cortex
4 lobes of the cerebral cortex
Frontal lobes, Parietal lobes, Occipital lobes, Temporal lobes
System of glands that release hormones
Endocrine System
located in the brain, called “master” gland
Pituitary gland
Releases thyroxin; regulates your body’s metabolism
Thyroid gland
any form of energy capable of producing a response
Stimulus
The process where receptor cells send a nerve impulse to the brain
Sensation
The process where the brain interprets sensations
Perception
Sensory data
Data driven “bottom up”
Based on expectations, emotions, memories, etc
Conceptually driven “top down”
a set of expectations that guide our perceptions
Perceptual set
Refers to the minimum strength of a stimulus needed to be detected
Absolute threshold
our system’s ability to provide info is reduced after prolonged exposure to a stimulus
Sensory adaptation
REM stands for
Rapid eye movement
