Chapter 3 Flashcards

1
Q

Insufflation

A

denotes the blowing of anesthetic gases across a patient’s face; considered a technique that avoids direct connection between a breathing circuit and a patient’s airway; no rebreathing if the flow is high enough, but ventilation cannot be controlled

Q

Open-drop anesthesia

A

highly volatile anesthetic (ether or halothane) dripped into gauze-covered mask and applied to patient’s face

Q

Draw-over anesthesia

A

air is drawn through a low-resistance vaporizer as the patient inspires; disadvantages: no reservoir bag (no depth of tidal volume), nonrebreathing valve, PEEP, and circuit filter close to patients head= difficult for head/neck surgery

Q

Which Mapleson design is most efficient for mechanical ventilation?

A

D; switches APL and fresh gas inlet– FGF forces alveolar air away from patient and toward APL valve

Q

Bain circuit

A

modification of Mapleson D that incorporates the fresh gas inlet tubing inside the breathing tube (decrease circuit bulk and retains heat and humidity)
