Chapter 3 Flashcards
STP port state Blocking
Not forwarding frames listening to BPDUs
STP port state Listening
Receving and transmitting BPDUs, discovering the topology
STP port state Learning
Populating the CAM table with MAC addresses
STP port state Forwarding
Actively participating in frame forwarding
STP port state Disabled
Not participating in STP
STP Max Age Timer
Length of time to wait to hear from root - 20 sec default
STP Forward Delay Timer
Amount of time spent at both listening and learning states - 15 seconds default
RSTP port state Discarding
prevents the forwarding of data frames, breaking layer 2 loops
RSTP port state Learning
accepts data frames to populate the MAC table to limit flooding of unknown unicast frames
RSTP port state Forwarding
forwarding switch ports determine the topology, after a change in topology or sync only after a proposal and agreement process
RSTP Link type p2p
port is operating in full duplex mode the port is connected to a single switch device at the other end of the link
RSTP Link type shared
Port is operating in half duplex mode, the port is connect to a shared media where multiple switches might exist ex hub
RSTP edge port
is a switch port that is never intended to be connected to another switch device
RSTP Topology Change
Only non-edge ports that are moving the the forwarding state cause a topology change. A port that is moving to blocking does not generate a TC
