Chapter 3 Flashcards
Grade Equivalents
Norm referenced scores that identify the academic grade level achieved by the examinee. They need to be interpreted with considerable caution. (raw scores)
EX: page 87
Criterion Referenced Score Interpretations
examinee is compared to a specific level of performance.
EX: Not compared to other people % correct on a class test, student scored 85%
Item Response Theory (IRT)
Theory model or mental measurement that holds that the responses to items on a test are accounted by latent traits.
EX: intelligence (latent trait)
a test that starts out easy getting harder as the test goes on.
Linear Transformation
retain the direction of the relationship with raw scores and the distribution retains its original shape.
EX: Page 79
Mastery Testing
determining whether the examinee has achieved a specific level of mastery of the knowledge and skills domain and is usually reported in an all or none score such as pass/fail.
Normalized Standard Scores
Standard Scores based on underlying distributions that were not originally normal, but were transformed into normal distributions.
EX: Stanine Scores, Weschler Scaled Scores, Normal Curve Equivalent.
Norm Referenced Score Interpretations
relative whereas criterion referanced scores are absolute.
EX: Being compared with other test takers. (person scored 95% higher than other test takers, still could be an âFâ)
Percentile Rank
Reflects examinees performance out of the group.
EX: scored in the 95th percentile, or your ranked #35 out of 50.
Raw Score
Number of items scored or coded in a specific manner such as correct/incorrect, true/false.
Standard Scores
Transformations of raw scores to desired scale with a predetermined mean and standard deviation.
Z- Scores
Simplest of the standard scores and indicate how far above or below the mean on the distribution raw score is in standard deviation units.
Standardized Sample
representative of the type of individuals expected to take the test.
EX: If 1% of students are african male than 1% of test would be geared towards that group.
If it is geared towards middle class white kids than it is a non standardized sample
