Q

What is meant by market pull? By technology push? interfunctional view?

A

Market Pull- Determine customer needs, organize the processes to fill the customer demand.
Technology Push- R&D, innovation, create new technologies & products, then marketing and sales creates demand.
Interfunctional View - Cross-functional in nature. All areas of the company are involved - R&D, engineering, marketing, market research, sales

Q

What are the typical phases in new product development?

A

1) Concept Development- Which includes meeting customer needs, Various alternatives are explored, Cross-Functional Team.
2) Product Design - Includes develop specificcations/ engineering drawings. Also work in parallel with process design.

3) Pilot Test -
- Based on Prototypes
- Test the product, product specifications
- Test the manufacturing process.

Q

Why is a cross-functional team a good idea for product development?

A

To prevent misalignments between functions of the company. Example if engineering designs a product that operations cannot produce with current tech or equipment

Q

What are some of the trade-offs in product design?

A

Its found in the roof of the House of Quality. Some trade offs would be coats of paint on a bike will make it less likely to rust but would add to weight making it slower.

6
Q

When should process design occur? Why?

A

Process design should occur at the same time as product design. This allows them to make alterations to the product to improve the production.

Q

What are the common elements in pilot testing?

A

products require testing of production prototypes before they are put into production. to facilitate full scale production an info package should be finalized that ocntains not only the product specs but also process design specs

Q

What is meant by concurrent engineering?

A

AKA Simultaneous Development Process, where all functions (Marketing, Engineering, Operations) are involved from the beginning.

Q

Describe the main components of the QFD matrix.

A

a tool for linking customer requirements as defined by the customer to technical specs. facilitates inter functional cooperation. identifies various customer attributes and matches it to engineering characteristics of the product. useful in increasing cross functional communications. a design can be developed that will meet the needs of the market while still considering all the design trade offs requries

customer attributes, engineering characteristics, customer perceptions, relative importance.

Q

What is meant by design for manufacturing?

A

Not focused on customer needs but ensure that products are manufacturer-able. Consists of two things 1)Simplifications of products and 2) manufacture of multiple products using common parts, processes and modules.

Q

What is modular design and what does it make possible?

A

Makes it possible to have relatively high product variety and low component variety at the same time. Core idea is to develop a series of basic product components that can be assembled into a large number of different products.
