Chapter 3 Flashcards
Antagonist
Substance that binds to a receptor and interferes/prevents the action of the transmitter
Agonist
A substance that binds to a receptor and initiates a response like that of a endogenous ligand
Up regulation
Compensatory increase in receptor availability at the synapse of the neuron
Down regulation
Compensatory reduction in receptor availability
Inotropic receptor
A receptor that includes an ion channel.
-opened when receptor is bound to particular ligand
Ligand gated ion channel
Opens/closes in response to a particular ligand
Metabotropic receptor
Receptor without an ion channel
-when activated uses a g protein system to alter function in post synaptic neuron
G protein
Resides in intracellular portion of receptor
- activated when ligand binds to a receptor
- part of 2nd messenger system
Degradation
Enzymatic breakdown pf NT’s into inactive metabolites
Reuptake
Process by which NT’s in synaptic cleft are taken ip by transporters
Transporters
Specialized receptors in presynaptic membrane/glia that recognize NT’s and return them for use
