First Estate
Included higher clergy that lived in luxury
Old Regime
Political and social system of France that hampered the attempts to solve the problems of the country, it divided all the people into three groups (estates)
Second Estate
Nobles that Made up less than 2 percent of french population. Most enjoyed great wealth and privileges
Third Estate
Included the bourgeoisie, peasants, and city workers. The vast majority were commoners (third estate)

Louis XVI’s first finance minister. He eased financial crisis

A king under the old regime who had centralized power in the royal bureaucracy. He was king for the longest time for a major country. Founded Versailles

A legislative assembly separated by each estate. Each estate elected its own deputies to this
National Assembly
Was a revolutionary assembly formed by the representatives of the third estate of the estate general
Versailles
A town founded by Louis XIV in France known for its chateau
Civil Constitution of the Clergy
Gave the French government control of the church and allowed citizens to elect bishops and priests
Constitution of 1791
Made France a limited monarchy and established a system of separation of powers.
National Convention
Met in late September. They voted to abolish monarchy and make France a republic. They sentenced Louis XVI to death for treason trying to destroy the revolution
Robespierre
Led the committee of public safety during the reign of terror. He believed state must be ruthless against its enemies
Committee of Public Safety
Created by the national convention in 1793 it waged brutal campaign against enemies of France. This was called the reign of terror
