Chapter 3 Flashcards
Chemical reactions are catalyzed by?
Enzymes
Metabolism
All the chemical reactions that occur within a cell 1000s of reactions Organized into connected pathways Very complex Catabolic & anabolic
Catabolic Pathways
Breakdown
Release energy & building blocks
Anabolic Pathways
Use energy & building blocks to make new molecules
Ex. synthesis of DNA & proteins
1st Law of Thermodynamics
Energy can be transferred or transformed from one form to another, but it can not be created or destroyed
2nd Law of Thermodynamics
In the universe or any isolated system, the degree of disorder can increase (spontaneous)
How do cells maintain order?
Cells take energy from the environment and use it to create order
Some energy is released as heat
Cells obtain energy through?
Oxidation of organic molecules
Respiration
Production of ATP occurs in a series of oxidation steps
Result: sugar is broken down into CO2
Photosynthesis has 2 stages. What are they?
- Light reactions
Sun energy -> production of high energy carrier molecules ATP, NADH, and NADPH - Dark reactions
CO2 is used to make sugar using ATP + NADH
