Chapter 3 Flashcards
What are the four emergent properties of water?
- Cohesive Behavior
- Ability to moderate tempature
- Expansion upon freezing
- Versatility as a solvent
What is cohesion?
When water molecules stick to other water molecules due to hydrogen bonding
What is adhesion?
Attraction between different substances.
What is surface tension?
Measure of diffuculty to strect or break the suface of a liquid
Hydrogen bonds give water a high surface tension
What is heat?
Measure of total amount of kinetic energy due to molecular motion
What is tempature?
Measure of intensity of heat due to the average kinetic energy of molecules mesured using Celsius degree
What is specific heat?
Amount of heat that must be absorbed/lost for 1g to change its temp by 1C
What is heat of vaporization?
The heat a liquid must absorb for 1g to be coverted to gas
What is colloid?
Stable suspension of fine particles on a liquid
What is an Acid?
Substance that increases the H concentration of a solution
What is a base?
Substance that reduces the H convercentration of a solution
How do buffer work?
They minimize changes in concentrations of H and OH in a solution
