Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is a element?
Substance that can NOT be broken down into any other substance by chemical reaction
What is a compound?
Substance consisting of two or more elements in a fixed ratio
What are the four major elements?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen
What are trace elements?
Elements required by an organism in minute quantities
What is a atom?
Smallest unit of matter that still retains the properties of an element
What is an isotope?
The same element that differ in number of neutrons
What is potential energy?
Energy that matter has because of its location or structure
What is a covalent bond?
Sharing of a pair of valence electrons by two atoms
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds.
What is a structual formula?
-notation used to represent atoms and bonding
–For example: H – H
What is a molecular formula?
Abberivated formula: H2
What is a compound?
Two or more different elements?
Define electronegativity?
Atom’s attraction for electrons in a covalent bond
What is a nonpolar covalent bond?
Atoms share the electrons equally
What is a polar covalent bond?
one atom is more electronegative, so atoms do NOT share the electrons equally
