chapter 3 Flashcards
what are the 3 chronic occlusive disease symptoms?
claudication
ischemic rest pain
tissue loss/ necrosis
what is claudication?
predictable pain in muscles with exercise but subsiding with rest
buttock claudication may suggest
aortoiliac disease
unilateral–iliofemoral disease
thigh claudication may suggest
distal external iliac/common femoral disease
calf claudication may suggest
femoral/popliteal disease
what is ischemic rest pain?
a more severe pain when the patient’s limb is not dependent (ex: sleeping)
what is the most severe symptom of arterial insufficiency?
tissue loss
list the 5 P’s
pain pallor pulselessness paresthesia paralysis
what are the 7 risk factors for arterial disease
diabetes hypertension smoking hyperlipidemia age family history male gender
where do diabetes have a higher incidence of arterial occlusive disease?
distal popliteal and tibial arteries
what is atherosclerosis?
thickening, hardening and loss of elasticity of the walls of the arteries
what is pallor?
result of deficient blood supply; skin is pale
what is rubor?
result of damaged, dilated vessels; dark reddish discoloration
what is cyanosis?
result of concentration of deoxygenated hemoglobin; bluish discoloration
what is livedo reticularis?
result of dilated capillaries and venules; purple patches on dorsum of foot
