What is social control?
How do we prevent people from engaging in deviance? (2)

Deterrence (2)

Someone committed a crime and got punished when they leave they won’t commit future crimes

When someone else gets punished it deters the general public from committing a certain type of offence
To be effective punishment must have (3)
1.) swift way - timely fashion - (misbehaving the punishment doesn’t
2.) Sever - making punishment harsh enough that people would be fearful but won’t revolt against it
3.) certainty - if they commit a crime they are going to be punished
Do longer sentences deter crimes ? (2)

1.)Criminals mixing together with other criminals can learn more effective crime

2.)Come to see it as their new home

Limitations of deterrences (5)
People aren’t always thinking rationally (high drink, mental health, heat of the moment-crime of passion)
2.)No ones thinks they are going to get caught
3.)Punishment wont impact everyone the same ( homeless people seeking refuge in jail)
4.)A fine ( if you’re rich paying a fine doesn’t matter)
5.)Case processing time ( cases can take months to go through all the different steps)
Retribution (2)
To denouncing unlawful behaviour by taking revenge on the offender
-The punishment should reflect the seriousness of the crime

Incapacitation:
removing offenders from society reduces re-offending
Selective incapacitation:
incapacitating the highest-risk offenders will reduce crime
Rehabilitation
helping a offenders develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes they require to reduce their likelihood of recidivism (repeat offenders)
What is the iron law imprisonment ?
its in our best interest to try rehabilitate criminals
Why is it difficult to rehabilitate offenders ? (4)
1.)Hard to teach prisooners in an environment that’s meant to punish them
2.)Not behind bars for a long time won’t be able to enter into programming
3.)Once leaving prison they are around the same people who got them locked up - Environment
4.)Citizen aren’t interested in paying more taxes for this type of programming
