Block Grant/Categorical Grant
Block- annual sum of money awarded by federal government to help fund a project or program
Categorical- main source of federal aid. Can only be used in certain areas
Concurrent powers
Powers shared by federal and state government
Ex: taxation
Expressed powers and implied powers
Expressed- powers of the U.S government listed in the constitution
Implied- powers congress exercises that are not listened in the constitution
Federalism (Dual and Cooperative)
Dual-political system that divides power between federal and state
Cooperative- federal and state government share power and work together
Full Faith and Credit Clause
Requires states respect the public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of other states
General Revenue Sharing
Federal government gives revenue to states of local government with little to no strings attached
Gibbons v Ogden
Decided that federal gov has executive power over interstate commerce
Home rule
A government of a colony which is dependent on its own citizens
McCulloch v Maryland
The fed. Gov. has the power to set up a federal bank which cannot be taxed by the states
Necessary and proper clause
Authorizes congress to employ any means that are plainly necessary in order to reach a conclusion
New deal
Safe guards to keep the bank from falling into economic disaster
10th Amendment
Any powers not given to the federal government are reserved for the states or the people
Preemption
Refers to the idea that a higher authority of law will displace the law of lower authority in law
Supremacy clause
Federal law takes precedence over state law in the event of conflict
Unitary System
Majority of governing power is concentrated at the national level with central government having the final say in all matters
