Chapter 3 Flashcards
What are semiconductors composed of?
Composed of single species of atoms (Si, Ge)
Amorphous
No recognizable long-range order
Polycrystalline
Completely order in segments
Crystalline
Entire solid is made up of atoms in an orderly array
What are semiconductors?
Can be varied over several orders of magnitude by in Temp., purity, optical excitation, and electrical excitation.
Unit Cell
Representative volume of the entire lattice
Lattice Constant
Length of a side of a cubic lattice
SC (simple cubic) unit cell
- 8 corner atoms
- # of atoms/unit cell = 8 * (1/8) = 1 atoms
BCC (body-centered cubic)
- 8 corner atoms
- 1 body corner atoms
- # of atoms/unit cell = 8 * (1/8) + 1 = 2 atoms
FCC (face-centered cubic)
- 8 corner atoms
- 6 face corner atoms
- # of atoms/unit cell = 8 * (1/8) + 6 * (1/2) = 4 atoms
Diamond Lattice
- Si, Ge
- 8 corner atoms
- 6 face corner atoms
- # of atoms/unit cell = 8 * (1/8) + 6 * (1/2) + 4 = 8 atoms
Miller Indices
A notation system used in crystallography to describe the orientation of planes and directions in a crystal lattice.
