Chapter 3 Flashcards
Chemistry of Life
Definition of Atoms
The basic building blocks of everyday objects.
( Protons, Neutrons, Electrons )
Can an atom be subdivided and still show its unique characteristics?
No.
What makes up an Atom?
Have equal number of protons (+) and electrons.
What are the most common atoms found in living organisms?
Hydrogen = H
Carbon = C
Nitrogen = N
Oxygen = O
Definition of Isotopes
atoms that differ in the number of neutrons but have the same number of protons
Definition of Radioactive Isotopes
Unstable; Nucleus decaying off energy
Definition of Molecules
Two or more atoms connected by chemical bonds
What makes up a Diamond
carbon atoms linked closely in a 3D structure,
-the hardest known substances.
What makes up a Graphite
-carbons are linked
- 2 dimensions
- layers slide past each other
- -only 1 atom thick.
What makes up a Graphene
a single sheet of carbons one- atom thick.
Used in electronics like touch screens.
What makes up a Buckyball/Fullerene
carbons form a sphere with their bonds in a geometric pattern like on soccer balls.
How do Atoms join up?
Electrons are the parts of the atom that come close to interact with other atoms
Participate in chemical reactions
What’s in the shell of an Electron?
Inner shell holds 2 electrons
How many protons and electrons are in Nitrogen?
Nitrogen (N) = 7 protons, 7 electrons
What are covalent bonds?
Atoms sharing electrons.
