Chapter 3 Flashcards
The Fellowship of the Ring
How long does Gandalf stay in the Shire after he tells Frodo of the story behind the Ring?
Two months.
Why does Gandalf eventually leave the Shire?
He has heard some “troubling news”, but otherwise, why he is leaving is a mystery.
Where does Gandalf tell Frodo to head first if he wants to destroy the Ring in Mordor?
Rivendell.
Who lives in Rivendell?
The Elves
Which three people does Frodo take on his journey to destroy the Ring?
Sam, Merry, and Pippin
Who tells Frodo that the creature who approached the three in the woods was a Black Rider?
Sam.
A few hours after the three leave, what approaches them in the woods?
A mysterious cloaked figure riding a horse. While in the movie, it was made clear that this was a Black Rider, the book does not elaborate on this until later.
What is a Black Rider?
Also called Nazguls, Black Riders are servants of Sauron. These used to be the nine men who were given the rings, but their power took hold of them and reduced them to slaves.
What happens to the three when they are almost at Rivendell?
A Black Rider approaches them again, but this time, they are unable to hide from it, and the Black Rider almost kills Frodo and gets the Ring.
Who saves the three from the second Black Rider?
The elves.
What does the road ahead symbolize throughout the book?
Adventure, instability, and a separation from the Shire
How far does Gandalf expect the road to take Frodo from the Shire?
To the Lonely Mountain
How do the characters in the novel help make this novel easily accessible to older children, who Tolkien intended the novel for?
By obviously distinguishing the characters as good and evil.
What is the only confusion throughout the whole book between good and evil?
The Ring, which brings evil to whoever it touches.
How does Frodo have an advantage over Sam, Merry, and Pippin when it comes to them being on the road?
Bilbo used to tell Frodo stories of him on the road. This, combined with Gandalf’s guidance, gives Frodo a solid foundation on where to go and what to avoid.
