Chapter 3 Flashcards
What is a mol ?
The amount of a substance containing 6.02x10^23 entities
(the number of entities in 12 grams of carbon-12)
What is the empirical formula ?
The simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound
What is a Molecular formula ?
The number of atoms of each element in a compound
What is a Relative molecular mass ?
Add up all the relative atomic masses in the molecular formula
What is the Relative formula mass ?
Add up all the relative atomic masses in the empirical formula
Finding empirical formula from mass ?
1.Use mole formula and calculate moles
2. Divide by smallest mol to find empirical ratio
How to find the molecular formula from mass/percentage ?
Take percentage as mass
Calculate moles
Find the empirical formula by finding the smallest WHOLE NUMBER ratio of moles
You would be given the relative molecular mass
Divide that by relative mass of the empirical formula
Find multiplier
Multiply empirical formula by that
What is the ideal gas equation ?
pV=nRT
P = pressure
V = volume
N = moles of gas
R = ideal gas constant
T = temp (kelvin)
What is percentage yield ?
( Actual yield / theoretical yield ) x 100
What is the atom economy ?
( Mr of desired / Mr of all ) x 100
What is the limiting reactant ?
The reactant with three least number of moles
