Chapter 3 Flashcards
Neuraxis
The axis of the central nervous system
Unilateral
“One side” ex: left leg only
Bilateral
“Two sides” ex: boths legs
Ipsilateral
“Same side of body” ex: left arm and left leg only
Contralateral
“Opposite side of body” ex: left arm and right leg only
Axial (transverse)
View from top-down, “birds eye”
Sagittal
View from the side “looking at ear”
Coronal
View from front or back “looking at face/back of head”
Dorsal
Ascending, afferent, somatosensory
Ventral
Descending, efferent, motor
The cell body of motor neurons are located where?
The grey matter of the spinal cord- they then attach to the ventral root
Where does the soma of sensory neurons reside?
The dorsal root ganglion
What does the somatic division of the peripheral nervous system consist of?
31 pairs of spinal nerves and 12 pairs of cranial nerves
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Regulates automatic behaviors of smooth and cardiac muscles and glands
involuntary; ie digestion
What are the two branches of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic branch and parasympathetic branch
