Chapter 3 Flashcards
How Well Do Telepsychology and Other Applications of Technology Work?
Approximately as well as traditional psychotherapy
Issues of telepsychology
APA/ CPA ethical code updates (where are people located- have to keep in mind for the different roll (provincial regulated rules for mental healthcare)
Specific ethical guidelines 🡪 CAP updates (Collect -Address-in case of emergency)
Differences in consent, confidentiality, and ethics
Factors that can affect telepsychology.
Not all clients are appropriate for online services (kids), high suicidal ideation, psychotic episodes, autism
Having others not to interrupt you (have to be alone to receive therapy)
Training to be in tele-therapy
Why Clinical Psychologists Should Prescribe?
Shortage of psychiatrists
Clinical psychologists are more expert than primary care physicians
Other non physician professionals already have prescription privileges
It would be faster for the general population to get access to medication
Evidence-Based Practice/Manualized Therapy
Defined as three-legged stool:
Research
Clinician’s knowledge and capability
Qualities of client
Advantages of Evidence-Based Practice/Manualized Therapy
Scientific legitimacy
Establishing minimal levels of competence
Training improvements
Decreased reliance on clinical judgment- would not have to make judgment calls because we are just following a program
Disadvantages of Evidence-Based Practice/Manualized Therapy
Not connecting with the client the same way.
Does it work for comorbid (anxiety+depression)
Something are easier to research for (some forms of therapy, should we discounted them for not being able to research?
Made in the us- not diversity and that manual works for that type of people but we dont know if ti works in other people
Overexpansion-Increase in size and scope of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM)
New disorders and lowered criteria for previous disorders
Significant time and energy spent on considering every proposed disorder
Controversies on some decisions
shorten the amount of time you have had to have a disorder (for 6 months to 3 weeks)
More people are going to meet criteria for the disorders
Pathologizing experiences that are normal ?
Currently, numerous disorders are under consideration for inclusion in next DSM such as…
Internet gaming disorder
Attenuated psychosis syndrome
Non-suicidal self-injury
