Chapter 3 Flashcards
What is a plasma membrane?
A phospholipid bilayer that surrounds a cell, that only allows certain substances through
What is a plasma membrane?
A phospholipid bilayer that surrounds a cell, that only allows certain substances through
- there are proteins, cholesterol, glycolipids and glycoproteins throughout this structure
- “Fluid Mosaic Model” - molecules that make up plasma membrane are in constant motion
What is Simple Diffusion?
The transport of molecules from and area of high concentration to an area of low concentration (does not require energy)
Does simple diffusion require energy?
No
What is osmosis?
The transport of water from an area of high concentration to low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane (does not require energy)
Does osmosis require energy?
No
What is facilitated diffusion?
movement of a molecule from an area of low concentration to high concentration using specific protein channels
What is active transport?
Movement of molecules from an area of low concentration to high concentration (against the gradient) (requires energy, usually ATP)
What are the three types of active transport?
- Primary Transport
2.Secondary Transport - Vesicular Transport
What is primary transport?
this is when specific transport molecules that move specific substances across cell membrane
What is secondary transport?
What is vesicular transport?
