Chapter 3 Flashcards
What are the key Behavioral Theory Models?
Health Belief Model
Self Determination Theory
Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of Behavior Change
What are the stages of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior change?
Precontemplation
Contemplation
Preparation
Action
Maintenance
What are some characteristics of the Precontemplation stage of TTM?
Inactive; activity not on the radar
Don’t see physical activity as relevant in their life.
What are some of the characteristics of the Contemplation stage of TTM?
Inactive, but THINKING about becoming active (within last 6 months)
Weighing pros and cons
Ambivilent about change
Don’t know how to go about changing
What are some of the characteristics of the Preparation stage of TTM?
Some physical activity as they are preparing [mentally and physically] about starting a program
Inconsistent, but ready to adopt & live an active lifestyle.
What are some of the characteristics of the Action stage of TTM?
Engaging in physical activity, but have been doing so for < 6 months
What are some of the characteristics of the Maintenance stage of TTM?
Engaging in physical activity for > 6 months.
What are some factors that complicate people making a behavioral change?
Environmental influences (physical / social)
Onion process – things change over time
Behavioral INTENTION and ACTIO are not the same!
Describe the Health Belief Model
Applicable to people in early stages of change bc they are still weighing pros/cons (TTM 1, 2)
Peoples ideas and underlying emotions about illness, prevention and treatments influence their behaviors & decisions.
Describe the variables of the Health Behavior Model that effect a decision to change.
Four variables
Health Threat /Illness
Perceived Susceptibility
Perceived Seriousness
Health Behavior that could reduce threat
Benefits
Barriers
What is the Self Determination Theory?
People pursue activities ad goals that they are naturally interested in or from what they believe will benefit them.
Autonomy, Competence, Relatedness
What are the different types of motivation and some details about each?
Different types of motivation influence the extent to which a person will seek out a new activity and persevere.
Autonomous - free will (intrinsic)
Controlled - pressure from outside (extrinsic)
Very few people are completely intrinsic so they need some amount of controlled motivation .
What is another name for the TTM of change?
Stages of change model
What are the four themes of TTM?
Understanding Stages of Change (5)
Understanding Processes of Change (no set way, not linear, asking open-ended Qs and listening)
Understanding Self Efficacy (belief in ability to successfully engage - ** related to program adoption and maintenance).
Understanding Decisional Balance (pros and cons shift as you go through the stages)
