Chapter 27: the male reproductive system Flashcards
What are gametes?
they are sex cells
eggs = females
sperm = males
What is a zygote?
it’s when an egg and sperm meet and combine their genes create a fertilized egg
What are the two things that are necessary for reproduction to be successful?
- Gamete motility so they can achieve contact (performed by sperm/spermatozoon)
- enough cytoplasm to divide up into the first cells of a developing embryo, with intracellular nutrients to sustain it until it begins to receive external nutrition. (performed by ovum/egg)
Why cant a single sex cell perform both roles necessary for reproduction to be successful optimally?
Because to contain ample cytoplasm means to be relatively large and heavy, and this is inconsistent with the need for motility
What is the purpose of the reproductive system in males
The male serves to produce sperm and introduce them into the female body.
What is the purpose of the reproductive system in females?
It produces eggs, receives the sperm, provides a place for the union of these gametes, harbors the fetus, gives birth, and nourishes the offspring
What are the primary sex organs? (aka gonads)
Organs that produces gametes:
testes in males
ovaries in females
What are secondary sex organs?
organs other than gonads that are necessary for reproduction.
What are secondary sex organs in males?
In the male, they constitute a system of ducts, glands, and the penis. They assist in sperm storage, survival, and delivery.
What are secondary sex organs in females?
the uterine tubes, uterus, and vagina/ They assist in uniting the sperm and egg and harboring the fetus.
According to location, what are the two ways reproductive organs are classified as?
External and internal genitalia.
Where are external genitalia located?
they are located in the perineum (the gooch, between the anus and scrotum).
Where are the internal genitalia located?
mainly in the pelvic cavity, except for the male testes and some associated cuts contained in the scrotum.
What are the external genitalia in males?
the penis and scrotum
What are the internal genitalia in males?
testes
epididymides
ductus deferens
seminal vesicles
prostate
bulbourethral glands
