Chapter 27 Concepts - Circuits Flashcards
Define electromotive force (emf)
the emf device does work on charge carriers; the rate at which work changes per charge; units: Volts (V)
Discuss the difference between an ideal and real emf device
Real emf device has an internal resistance while an ideal one does not
Describe Kirchhoff’s Loop Rule
The algebraic sums of the changes in potential encountered in a complete traversal of any loop of a circuit must be zero
Define the resistance rule
for a move through the resistance in the direction of the current, the potential difference is negative
For a move in the opposite direction of the current, the potential difference is positive
Describe the resistances for a series circuit
when a potential difference is applied across the resistance in blank, the resistances have identical currents
Describe Kirchhoff’s Junction Rule
The sum of the currents entering any blank must be equal to the sum of the currents leaving that blank
Describe the resistances for a parallel circuit
When a potential difference is applied across resistance connected in blank, the resistances all have that same potential difference
Define an RC circuit
contains a capacitor, an emf device, and a resistor
Describe how to find equivalent resistance in series circuits vs parallel circuits
In blank it is the sum of all resistances in the circuit
In blank it is the reciprocal sum of all resistances in the circuit
