What does the external genitalia include?
vulva, mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, urethral meatus, vaginal orifice
What is the internal genitalia
vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries
what makes the external genitalia engorged in females at birth
presence of maternal estrogen; size recedes in a few weeks.
Where are the ovaries located during childhood, where and when do they relocate
ovaries are in the abdomen in childhood. they move into the pelvis at the time of menarche
What happens to vaginal secretions during pregnancy
they increase due to lactobacillus acidophilus that changes glycogen into lactic acid. the uterus moves up to the liver, displacing intestines both laterally and superiorly
why is the risk of yeast infection greater in pregnancy
this is due to an increase in glycogen
What is menopause, what is the mean age?
48-51. Menopause is the cessation of menses, ovaries stop producing progesterone and estrogen, decreased size of uterus, ovaries atrophy, uterus droops, vagina less elastic; atrophies, decreased secretions decreased sexual response, decreased vaginal secretions, decreased duration of orgasm and rapid resolution
what subjective data do you need to obtain
menstrual history, obstetric history, menopause, acute pelvic pain, vaginal discharge, DM, past sexual history, current sexual history, contraceptive use, STI contact
What is avg menstruation
Q 28days, 3-7 days duration
Obstetric history: what is gravida, para, and abortions
gravida: pregnancies, para: live births, abortions: interrupted pregnancies
what are symptoms of menopause
hot flashes, night sweats, numbness and tingling, headaches, palpitations, mood swings, assess reaction to loss.
What does acute pelvic pain indicate
PID, appendicitis, ruptured ovarian cysts, ovarian torsion
What do you ask about if the patient c/o urinary symptoms?
urgency, dysuria, nocturia, hematuria, urge incontinence, stress incontinence
what are characteristics of vaginal discharge
normal: small, clear, cloudy, and non-irritating
abnormal: odiferous, green, yellow, curdlike, intense itching, burning
what subjective questions do you ask if a female has abnormal discharge
medications? history of DM, use of douches, sprays, type of underwear, pantyhose,
