Chapter 25 Flashcards
Is the conversion of painful stimuli to an electrical impulse through peripheral nerve fibers (nociceptors)
Transduction
Occurs as the electrical impulse travels along the nerve fibers, where neurotransmitters regulate it.
Transmission
Is the point at which a person feels pain
Pain threshold
Is the amount of pain a person is willing to bear
Pain tolerance
Occurs in various areas of the brain, with influences from thought and emotional processes
Perception or awareness of pain
Occurs in the spinal cord, causing muscles to contract reflexively, moving the body away from painful stimuli
Modulation
Substances that increase pain transmission and cause an inflammatory response
Substance P
Prostaglandins
Bradykinin
Histamine
Substances that decrease pain transmission and produce analgesia
Serotonin
Endorphins
Capable of appreciation or transmission of pain
Nociceptive
Relating in any way to neuropathy (any disorder affecting the nervous system)
Neuropathy
Is a form of chronic pain without a know cause, or pain that exceeds typical pain levels associated with the clients condition
Idiopathic pain
A substance added to a drug product formulation that affects the action of the active ingredient in a predictable way
Adjuvant
Poisoning by salicylic acid or any of its compounds
Salicylism
By some other means than through the gastrointestinal tract; referring particularly to the introduction of substances into an organism by intravenous, subcutaneous, intramuscular, or intramedullary injection
Parenteral
Preventing or arresting vomiting
A remedy that tends to control nausea and vomiting
Antiemetic
