The dynasty of Shi’ite Muslims that ruled Persia from the 1500s to the 1700s.

Highest religious official of the Ottoman Empire.
Shaykh al-Islam
Members of a cult founded in the sixteenth century CE who seek a middle way between Islam and Hindu belief; centered in the Punjab region in Northern India.
Sikhs
A term that came to be applied to the Chancery and diplomatic corps of the Ottoman bureaucracy.
Sublime Porte
Ottoman Sultan, 1520-1566 CE. Greatest of the Ottoman sultans, his long reign was the high-water mark for the Ottoman Empire.
