Chapter 24 - Particle physics Flashcards
What was the initial model of an atom?
The electrons were spread out within a globe of positive charge
What was Rutherford’s experiment?
He fired alpha particels at a sheet of very thin gold foil. When they hit a flourescent screen they flashed so they could count how many defelected and at what angle
What conclusions could be drawn from the Rutherford experement?
Most went straight throught the foil -> so the atom is mostly empty space
Some were deflected by large angles -> so the center must have a large positive charge to repel them
Very few deflections by more than 90 degrees -> Nucleus must be very small
What is an isotope?
It has the same proton number but different nucleon numbers
What affects the stability of a nucleus?
The number of neutrons
