Chapter 2.4 (Federalism) Flashcards
What are federations?
Federations divide the powers of the government between a single central government and two or more regional governments.
Why aren’t local governments and territories part of the federal structure?
Local governments and territories aren’t part of the federal structure because they do not have autonomous powers.
What is a unitary system of government?
Unitary systems of government, such as Britain, have one national government that makes laws for the whole nation on all matters.
What is a coercive federation?
Coercive federations feature weak state governments and the central authority effectively dominates the regional governments.
What is a coordinate federation?
Coordinate federations are where the federal government and state governments act independently in their respective spheres.
What is a cooperative federation?
In cooperative federations, the central and regional governments work together to solve common problems.
