Chapter 24 - Changes in Communities Flashcards
What is succession?
a change in a community over time
3 phases of succession?
Colonisers/pioneers: first plants to grow on the bare surface
Immature phase
Climax Community
What is primary succession?
changes in a community begin with bare rock (NO SOIL)
what is secondary succession?
due to a disturbance in an already established community, such as fire or flood which removes most or all of the original vegetation. soil is present
Suceession leads to…
a change in the mixture of species over time!
What is biodiversity
the variety and abundance of species
why is biodiversity important?
humans benefit from it eg. food, shelter, medicine
all life is interconnected: if one is affected all is –> saving a species is not the same as maintaining a living community
all life should be respected, humans should not lead to destruction of species
