chapter 23 - the transition metals Flashcards
State three characteristic features of chemistry of Vanadium and it’s compounds
it has variable oxidation states
it can form colored complexes
It can act as a catalyst
What is a Lewis base
an electron pair donor
What is a Lewis acid
an electron pair acceptor
Why can transition metals form colored complexes
electrons get excited and move to a higher energy level/orbital
The electrons can absorb UV light/white light
The colors that are reflected[Solids]/transmitted[Solutions] are seen
Suggest one reason other than color why potassium dichromate is unfavorable in drinking water
it has a foul smell
Explain why transition metals that adsorb weakly are not good catalysts
The reactants aren’t brought together as well
there is not much of an increase of the reactant on the surface of the catalyst
The reactants are not held long enough for the reaction to occur
The reactants bonds aren’t weakened
