Chapter 23: Respiratory (lecture 15) Flashcards
Visceral Pleura covers what?
Lungs
Parietal Pleura lines and covers what?
lines ribcage and cover upper surface of diaphragm
what enters at hilus?
blood vessels and airways
type I alveolar cells?
simple squamous cells where gas exchange occurs
type II alveolar cells?
- free surface has microvilli
- secrete alveolar fluid containing surfactant
alveolar dust cells
wandering macrophages remove debris
Exchange of gas from alveoli to blood there are
4 Layers of membrane to cross
- alveolar epithelial wall of type I cells
- alveolar epithelial basement membrane
- capillary basement membrane
- endothelial cells of capillary
what happens when air moves INTO lungs?
pressure inside lungs is less than atmospheric pressure
what happens when air moves OUT of lungs?
pressure inside lungs is greater than atmospheric pressure
Atmospheric pressure
1 atm or 760mmhg
Boyle’s Law
the pressure and volume of a gas have an inverse relationship, when temperature is held constant
