Chapter 2.3 Flashcards
What is Energy (CTDW or HT)?
Capacity to Do Work OR Heat Transfer
What types of energy are there? (KSHT ER)?
Kinetic
Stored
Heat or Transfer
Electromagnetic Radiation
What are two examples of potential energy (DR)
Dam holding water
Rock held in your hand (potential to be used)
How can potential energy be turned to kinetic energy? (WFTD)
Water flows through dam (moves)
What is Electromagnetic Radiation ? (ETW)
Energy that travels in waves
Explain how energy varies in quality (SHL)
Some energy is more useful that others and energy can be high quality concentrated energy or low quality which is widely dispersed in a cool temp
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
BM
When energy is changed from physical to chemical, no energy is created or destroyed.
We cannot get more out of a physical or chemistry than we put in.
Energy must be balanced and you cannot get more out of it.
What is the 2nd law of thermodynamics? (EHL)
Energy goes from high to low quality.
What is a System? (SCFIRW)
Set of components that function in a regular way
What are examples of a system? (CHFECE)
Cell Human Body Forest Economy Car Earth
What are the three ingredients to a system? (IFTO)
Inputs
Flow or Throughput
Outputs
What makes a system unsustainable? (WA)
When throughputs use more inputs than can be used.
And outputs are absorbed and diluted
What is a positive feedback loop? (GF)
It makes the system go forward.
What is a negative feedback loop? (T or AR)
Think of a thermometer that can go down.
Think of Aluminum being recycled.
