Chapter 22: The Heart Flashcards
what makes up the systemic circulation?
- Left atrium
- Left ventricle
- Aorta to systemic arteries
- systemic veins
- capillaries
what makes up the pulmonary circulation?
- Pulmonary veins
- Pulmonary arteries
- Right atrium
- Right ventricle
- Capillaries
what does the right side of the heart do?
- receives blood from body
2. pumps blood out to lungs
what does the left side of the heart do?
- receives blood from lungs
2. pumps blood out to the body
where does the heart sit in the body?
mediastinum
what is the heart surrounded by?
pericardial sac (pericardium)
what is the pericardium?
it is a fluid filled sac for protection and anti-friction of the heart
what is inflammation of the pericardium called?
Pericarditis
what are the two layers of the pericardium?
parietal and visceral layer separated by the pericardial cavity
how many chambers does the heart have? and what r they?
4 Right atrium Right ventricle Left atrium Left ventricle
What separates the two ventricles?
inter-ventricular septum
what are the significant differences between the two ventricles?
right ventricle : crest shaped less muscle
left ventricle : circular and has more muscle
why would the left ventricle have more muscle?
it has to be stronger to pump blood throughout the whole body
how many valves does the heart have and what are they?
4 pulmonary semilunar valve right atrioventricular valve left atrioventricular valve arotic semilunar valve
what is another name for the right atrioventricular valve?
tricuspid
what is another name for the left atrioventricular valve?
bicuspid or mitral
what are the strings called that connect the Tricuspid and Mitral valves to the heart wall?
chordae tendineae
what is the muscle inside the heart that is connected to the tricuspid and mitral valves?
papillary muscle
where does the Aorta send blood?
to all parts of the body
